Herrle's Country Farm Market
Our retail farming business began in 1964 when Howard and Elsie Herrle began growing a few acres of sweet corn and sell…
This is our 8th year of offering a selected listing of dahlia tubers for sale for spring 2026.
However, we are not a new company! We are actually a very well established 4th generation flower growing business.
It all began in 1922 when Len bought a package of glads from Woolworth's in Toronto and planted them in his dad's garden, that is when he caught the bug... In 1934 newlyweds Len and Emily Butt sent out a mail order list offering their gladiolus bulbs for sale to the public. By 1950 the simple two-page list had evolved into a 10-page "Gladalogue." As the business grew, so did the different types of bulbs and tubers. Len loved to try his hand at growing many different varieties of bulbs, tubers, and perennials. Dahlias were first introduced into our flower fields in the late 1960s.
Unfortunately, interest in both cut dahlia flowers and tubers did not catch on enough for us to continue to produce them at that time. But in the early 1990s, a sudden "love for dahlias" began. This great demand encouraged us to again introduce dahlia blooms to our wondrous variety of cut flowers. This trend seems to be continuing and we are now cutting, packing and shipping over ten thousand stems per week during August and September.
Twenty-five years later, we not only continue to grow Len's favorite flower, the glorious gladiolus, but his next closest favorite: the delightful dahlia. We're sure he must be happy as he looks down on the fields in bloom and continues to smile and "keep track of it all!”
Today we grow over 25 acres of dahlias, gladiolus, star of Bethlehem, peonies, lupins, delphiniums, and statice, just to name a few. It takes a lot of hard work – mostly hand labor – to produce top-quality, beautiful blooms for our retail and wholesale markets. The positive feedback and ever-increasing demand for our flowers make the work all worthwhile.
We now grow over 200 dahlia varieties and add new ones for trial each year. In this catalogue we have listed some of our standard varieties, along with a few new or unusual ones which we hope you will be interested in ordering. Dahlias make a wonderful garden flower, whether they’re for a grand colorful show in your borders or for cutting blooms to use for bouquets. They are easy to care for and will keep blooming until frost.
We hope you will take the time to study our listing, choose some varieties you just can't live without and send in your order early. We know you will be happy with our quality, healthy tubers, and will enjoy growing these delightful dahlias.
Thank you in advance for your order! Your business and loyal support of the flower industry helps us to continue growing flowers on our family-operated farm, near Rockwood, Ontario. It also helps us carry on in our faithful endeavour to carry on Len's legacy and his (and our) love of growing beautiful flowers.
